#OpenSourceHiggsfield: Comfy's $25K challenge and the first open rebuilds
Comfy put up $25K for open-source rebuilds of Higgsfield-style apps. Within a day: a camera-move studio, open-weights VFX presets, a script-to-Resolve film studio, and an MCP-only video editor.
On Oct 15, ComfyUI said Higgsfield had promised to open-source its platform and hadn't, and launched a two-week challenge to build open versions on the Comfy Developer Platform (Comfy API, Comfy Router and/or Comfy SDK). That framing is Comfy's, not ours. Prizes from the challenge page: $10,000 Best Overall; RTX 5090s for Most Innovative, Most Viral and Open Weights Only (no partner nodes or APIs); ten $250 Comfy-credit runner-up prizes; plus partner bonuses: $2,000 cash for a VFX workflow with LTX as the core model, FLUX API credits, and $1,000 in MiniMax API credits for H3-core builds. Submissions close Oct 30 at 9am PT, and winners are announced Nov 6. Each entry needs a licensed GitHub repo you can run locally, a demo video of two minutes or less, and a social post tagged #OpenSourceHiggsfield. Entries must be lawful and SFW, with no unlicensed IP or likenesses. There are in-person build nights in SF (Oct 28) and LA (Oct 29).
Comfield by @synthetic_ape (MIT, created Oct 16) is the most direct 'Higgsfield-style studio' entry we've seen. The README lists an image studio (up to 10 references) and a video studio covering t2v, i2v and first-to-last-frame. Cloud models go through Comfy Router (Seedance 2.5, Kling 3.0 Omni, Veo 3.1, LTX 2.5, Wan 3.0 and others), and open-weights models (LTX-2, MiniMax H3, FastH3) run on your own GPU. It also has 27 camera-motion presets with live previews, shot/lens/lighting controls, A–D takes per shot, live cloud pricing, and a local library.
FXjutsu by Audrius (@Audrius1454663) rebuilds Higgsfield-style VFX presets on your own footage using open weights only: LTX-2.5 plus Lightricks IC-LoRAs, with no partner API nodes. Presets include Vanish (clean plate), Day to Night, Flood/Tsunami, Alpha Matte, Set on Fire/Smoke from painted keyframes, and Claymation/Frozen/Anime restyles. The composite presets (Golden Statue, Toon World, Ghost) chain several adapters and then do a real masked composite, so only the subject changes. The README reports 2–3 minutes per 5-second clip on an RTX 4090 (LTX-2.5 distilled int8, 8 steps). When we checked, GitHub's API didn't detect a license file, so check the repo before you build on it.
Red Clover Studio by @shawnwriteshere (MIT, alpha, macOS-only testing so far) goes script → cast/locations vault → storyboards → video takes → rough cut → DaVinci Resolve round-trip, with a per-take budget cap. It routes models through fal, Atlas Cloud, Comfy Router (MiniMax H3, Seedance, Nano Banana) and others. It can pick the cheaper service when two sell the same model, and it re-checks prices every six hours. The README's sample production lists $53.99 of API spend against a $60 cap, taken from the app's own ledger. kimo by @ven_ai_lab (MIT, Rust) is a video editor with no GUI: all 376 registered tools are MCP calls (cuts, keyframes, grading, tracking, captions, audio, 3D). It has a CPU renderer and is tuned for a 2 GB machine. Our take: none of these are tested by us yet, and most are days old with single-digit stars. But the challenge is pulling real, inspectable pipelines into the open fast, and it's worth watching #OpenSourceHiggsfield until Oct 30.
